What Rules Still Apply on Free Fishing Days?

Most states are explicit that normal fishing regulations still apply on free fishing days. The safest rule is simple: license waiver first, regulation check second.

Harvest limits still apply

If a state allows anglers to fish without a license for the day, it still controls how many fish may be kept and what size they must be. A free fishing day is not an unlimited harvest day.

Closed seasons and closed waters stay closed

A free fishing weekend does not open a species that is out of season. It also does not open waters that are closed for conservation, safety, tribal, private, or local management reasons.

Species exceptions are common

Washington is a useful example: the state lists important exceptions for species such as shellfish, salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and halibut. Other coastal states may have similar distinctions.
